Wicker plant baskets and basket planters

A basket planter is a woven basket that holds a potted plant, so the plain pot sits inside a natural weave. Our plant baskets come in wicker, rattan, bamboo, seagrass and lepironia, and most of the listings say they are handwoven by artisans in Thailand. PA WAT is listed as a handmade plant basket for indoor plants, ferns or succulents, 15 cm (6 in) across and 18 cm (7 in) high, and the KUNNI seagrass basket, with woven handles, names plant covers among its uses. For small cacti, the KA NOK PON set gives you 10 plant pots, each 7 by 7 cm (3 by 3 in).

Choosing a plant basket size

Measure the outside of your pot, including any saucer, and pick a basket a little wider. Many of the baskets here are 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) across. The Wa Rin Ram Pai rattan basket is 12 cm (5 in) across and 15 cm (6 in) high, and the PUN DA, NI RA MAN and MA YA VEE wicker baskets are each 15 cm (6 in) across and 17 cm (7 in) high, sold in sets of 2. The NA LIN DA and PAN RA WIN sets are 15 cm (6 in) across and 18 cm (7 in) high, and the PI YA PON planter basket is lower, at 10 cm (4 in) high and 15 cm (6 in) wide.

Danika comes in three rattan sizes, from 12 cm (5 in) to 17 cm (7 in) wide, and KUNNI in two seagrass sizes, 17 cm (7 in) and 20 cm (8 in). For a larger plant, the KODCHAON bamboo basket is 20 cm (8 in) wide and 26 cm (10 in) high, and TITAYA is 25 cm (10 in) across and 27 cm (11 in) high. For baskets to organise the rest of the home, see our storage baskets.

Using a woven basket as a planter

Woven baskets are not watertight, and the product pages advise keeping these baskets in a well ventilated space and away from direct contact with water. So treat the basket as a cover rather than the pot itself: leave the plant in its own pot with a saucer, or set a liner inside the basket. Water the plant away from the basket, let the pot drain, then put it back.

To clean a basket, the listings suggest dusting with a soft, dry cloth, wiping with a slightly damp cloth for a deeper clean and letting it dry completely, without soaking it. Our guide on how to clean wicker baskets has more tips, and our bamboo baskets collection has more bamboo designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

We suggest not. The listings advise keeping these baskets away from direct contact with water, so keep the plant in its own pot with a saucer, or add a liner, and set that inside the basket. Lift the pot out to water it and let it drain before putting it back.

Many are 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) across, which suits small pots. The larger designs are KUNNI at up to 20 cm (8 in), KODCHAON at 20 cm (8 in) wide and TITAYA at 25 cm (10 in) across. Each product page lists its own measurements.

The listings name these materials: wicker for PUN DA, NI RA MAN and MA YA VEE, rattan for Danika and Wa Rin Ram Pai, bamboo for KODCHAON, TITAYA and KAN YA NA, seagrass for KUNNI and lepironia for PAN RA WIN.

Yes. PUN DA, NI RA MAN, MA YA VEE, NA LIN DA and PAN RA WIN are each sold as a set of 2 baskets, which suits a pair of plants on a shelf or windowsill. KA NOK PON is a pack of 10 small cactus plant pots.
