Water hyacinth uses dried freshwater-plant stems — naturally honey-coloured, chunkier in texture and very hardwearing. Spot-clean with a slightly damp cloth and a little mild soap — never soak it, as natural fibres absorb water and can lose their shape. For stubborn marks, work gently with a soft brush (an old toothbrush is perfect), then let the bag air-dry completely, away from direct sun or a radiator, which can dry the fibres too fast and cause cracking. Between uses, stuff it with crumpled paper or a t-shirt and store it upright rather than hanging it by the handles, which stretches them over time.
