Large bamboo pendant lights do more than light a room — they give it a centre. Each piece here is handwoven by Thai artisans from bamboo strips into a wide, open shade, 40 cm in diameter and up, that spreads a warm golden glow over the space below. The open weave throws soft shadow onto the ceiling and walls, so the light feels generous rather than harsh. Pieces like the DARIN (48–54 cm) and the oversized TEERAYA carry the look at full scale.
Our large bamboo pendant lights are available as plug-in fixtures with an adjustable cord or as hardwired ceiling pendants, and many designs run up through XL, XXL and XXXL sizes. They suit dining tables, kitchen islands, open-plan living spaces and tall stairwells — anywhere one wide shade can anchor the room. For smaller corners, see our small bamboo pendant lights.
The artisans in our village transformed the weaving they once used for large bamboo fishing traps into these oversized pendant lights, carrying generations of weaving heritage into a modern home. A wide shade takes far longer to weave by hand than a small one, which is why a genuine large handwoven pendant carries a presence a moulded fixture never will.
Picture warm light spilling across the whole table at dinner, the wide weave throwing soft pattern across the ceiling above. A large bamboo pendant anchors a dining table or island as a single piece — choose a shade roughly 30 cm (12 in) narrower than the table width so it reads generous without crowding the space.
In a double-height room, a stairwell, or an open-plan living space, a large shade fills volume that a small pendant can't. Hung high, an oversized 50–60 cm piece like the DARIN draws the eye up and warms the whole room with a single source of soft golden light.
We class shades 40 cm (about 16 inches) and up as large, running through XL, XXL and XXXL up past 60 cm. Sixteen inches is our most-searched size — wide enough to anchor a table or island without overwhelming a standard room — while the 50–60 cm pieces suit dining tables, open-plan spaces and tall ceilings. Each product page lists the exact diameter. As a guide for a dining table, choose a shade roughly 30 cm (12 in) narrower than the table width.
Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the shade 70–85 cm (28–34 in) above the tabletop on a standard 8-ft ceiling; over a kitchen island, 75–90 cm of clearance below the light works well. In a tall or double-height room you can hang higher to fill the volume. A large single pendant usually reads better than several small ones over one table. Every light ships with its mounting hardware; for hardwired fittings, use a qualified electrician.
No — woven bamboo is light for its size, so even a 50–60 cm shade weighs far less than a comparable metal or glass fixture. Each light ships with mounting hardware rated for its weight, and a standard ceiling rose or hook will carry it. For the largest sizes, fix into a joist or use an appropriate plasterboard fixing, exactly as you would for any ceiling pendant.
A large shade spreads warm, naturally diffused light over a wide area, but the open weave softens it rather than flooding the room. Fit a warm-white LED (around 2700K) with plenty of output — 1100 lumens or more for a dining or living area, and consider two bulbs or a cluster for a large open-plan space. Choose a slightly higher-output bulb than you would behind a solid shade, and a dimmable one so you can take it from bright at dinner to a soft evening glow. Over a kitchen island, treat it as ambient light and add task lighting on the worktop.
Not a problem. Every order comes with a 30-day return window — if the light doesn't work in your space, contact us and we'll arrange a free return. We also offer styling advice by email: send a photo of the room, with ceiling height and table or island size noted, and we'll recommend the right diameter and hanging height before you order. We'd rather help you choose well than process a return.
