Wicker baskets and rattan baskets: what is the difference?

Rattan is a climbing palm whose canes are used for weaving, while wicker is the name of the weave itself, so a wicker basket can be made from rattan or from another plant fiber. This page holds both kinds. On the wicker side are the WA LAI baskets, KA NUCH, TA MA and the kitchen sets; on the rattan side are Danika, NADIA, TON YA WEE, Navinda, JUNTRA, DAORUNG, Alyssa, Wa Rin Ram Pai and the SA NA box. BUABAN and Isaline are woven from natural bamboo. Our guide to rattan vs wicker compares the two in more detail.

Woven baskets by shape, tone and finish

Shapes and finishes vary from piece to piece. WA LAI is the core wicker design, made in 11, 12 and 14 inch widths, while KA NUCH is a broader open weave wicker basket, 38 cm (15 in) across, with integrated handles. On the rattan side, NADIA and the Handwoven Rattan Basket Set of 2 have a warm honey tone, and NADIA adds a handle for carrying it from room to room. For small things there is SA NA, a rattan box with a fitted lid and a woven handle, about 13 cm wide, suggested for jewelry, keepsakes and other small treasures. Navinda and JUNTRA are round rattan baskets, each offered in a small and a large size, and DAORUNG is a shallow rattan tray basket sold singly or as a set of 2. For a woven bamboo basket, BUABAN is a shallow piece listed at 35 cm (14 in) and Isaline a round one listed at 22 cm (9 in).

Rattan baskets and wicker sets for the kitchen

A handful of designs are meant for the kitchen and dining table. MA YA VEE and ROM RA WIN are wicker utensil baskets sold as pairs, each basket 15 cm (6 in) across and 17 cm (7 in) tall, with an open weave that lets air through and helps utensils stay dry. PUN DA and NI RA MAN are pairs of the same size, suggested for kitchen, bathroom and office odds and ends. The rattan Wa Rin Ram Pai basket, 12 cm (5 in) across and 15 cm (6 in) tall, can stand on the table with cutlery or napkins, or serve bread.

Styling wicker baskets around the house

The listings suggest plenty of everyday jobs. A WA LAI basket can hold fruit on a sideboard, a pot of fresh or dried flowers, or towels and magazines, and KA NUCH has room for a throw, toys or laundry. The small TON YA WEE rattan basket, 24 cm (9 in) wide, keeps keys, stationery or jewelry tidy, or holds potpourri. If you are shopping by shelf size rather than by look, our storage baskets for shelves page goes through the measurements. For shallow pieces that hold keys or fruit, browse wicker trays and baskets. For care between uses, read our guide on how to clean wicker baskets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. Wicker describes the weave, so the fiber depends on the basket. Danika, NADIA, TON YA WEE, Navinda, JUNTRA, DAORUNG, SA NA and Wa Rin Ram Pai are named as rattan in their listings, and BUABAN and Isaline are bamboo. WA LAI, KA NUCH, TA MA and the wicker utensil pairs are described as wicker without naming the plant fiber.

Several do. SA NA is a compact rattan box, 9 cm tall, with a fitted lid that carries a woven handle. KA NUCH has integrated handles, NADIA has an integrated handle, and one of the 14 inch WA LAI listings has side handles and a pattern in natural and dark tones. Where a listing does not mention a handle or a lid, look closely at its photos before you order.

Both. ROM RA WIN, MA YA VEE, PUN DA, NI RA MAN and TA MA are each sold as a set of two baskets, and TA MA lets you pick style A or B. Danika is sold one at a time in small, medium or large, from 12 to 20 cm (5 to 8 in) tall. Each WA LAI listing is one width, either 11, 12 or 14 inches, so choose the listing that matches the size you need. Alyssa and DAORUNG come singly in small or large or as a set of 2, TU VA NAN as style A, style B or a set of 2, and TON YA WEE in small, medium, large or a set of 3.

Very close, but not always identical. The wicker and rattan baskets are woven by hand, and listings such as Danika, the wicker utensil pairs and TA MA point out small differences in size, shape, weave or tone from one piece to the next. If you are matching baskets side by side or fitting a tight gap, leave a little room around the measurements given on the product page.

Yes. Any basket size in our range can be supplied in quantity, for example for a retail display, a hotel or an event. Use the Wholesale Inquiries page to tell us which designs and sizes you want and how many, and we will come back with a quote. Bulk orders ship from Thailand, and the buyer pays any import duties or local taxes.
