Zabuton cushion sizes: 48, 50 and 70 cm

A zabuton is the flat, square mat that goes under a zafu, so your knees and ankles rest on the mat rather than on a bare floor. Our zabutons come in three footprints. BEN YA PA and A CHI RA are 48 cm (18 in) square, PHA NA and WA SI NEE are 50 cm (20 in), and PHONG PHIR, KHA CHA THARN, PA THA PEE, WIT CHA PHON, WI KUN DA and WAN RA PHA are 70 cm (28 in). Each lists a 6 cm (2 in) height. The 48 and 50 cm mats fit a small corner, while the 70 cm mats cover more floor around your cushion. To see how the two pieces work together, read our guide to what a zafu is.

Kapok zabuton mats and what the listings say

Every zabuton here is filled with natural kapok. PA THA PEE gives the fullest material details: kapok stuffing, a double seamed cotton cover and a mattress thickness of 4.5 cm (2 in). BEN YA PA is titled a kapok zabuton, and both BEN YA PA and A CHI RA describe a natural filling with a soft cover. Not every listing names its cover fabric, so check each product page if the cover matters to you. Every zabuton is handmade in Thailand and ships from there.

Roll up zabuton and mat designs

If storage space is tight, PA THA PEE is the roll up zabuton. Its listing describes rolling it up for storage or travel, at 70 by 20 by 20 cm (28 by 8 by 8 in) when rolled, and names brown and red in its color details. For pattern, KHA CHA THARN carries an elephant design in black and red, and WIT CHA PHON a hill tribe batik in black and white. PHONG PHIR is described as minimalist and PHA NA as neutral, while BEN YA PA and A CHI RA mention subtle colors with a minimalist style, so the plainer mats suit a quiet, simple corner.

Using a zabuton as a meditation mat

Pair a mat with one of our zafu meditation cushions for a classic seated setup, or buy both pieces together from our zafu and zabuton sets. The BEN YA PA and A CHI RA listings also suggest their mats for yoga, mindfulness exercises or as a floor seat on their own. For a seat with a backrest, read about meditating with a Thai triangle pillow. We charge nothing for standard shipping on any order. Expect your mat within 2 to 10 business days; import duties, if any, are the buyer's to pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mainly as the base layer under a zafu meditation cushion: the flat, square mat means your knees and ankles rest on it instead of the floor. The BEN YA PA and A CHI RA listings also suggest using the mat on its own for yoga, mindfulness exercises or as a floor seat. Every zabuton here is handmade in Thailand and listed at 6 cm (2 in) high.

There are three sizes, all square. BEN YA PA and A CHI RA are 48 cm (18 in) on each side, PHA NA and WA SI NEE are 50 cm (20 in), and PHONG PHIR, KHA CHA THARN, PA THA PEE, WIT CHA PHON, WI KUN DA and WAN RA PHA are 70 cm (28 in). Each lists a height of 6 cm (2 in), and PA THA PEE also gives a mattress thickness of 4.5 cm. Measure your floor space and compare it with each product page.

Yes. Every zabuton on this page is filled with natural kapok. PA THA PEE lists kapok stuffing with a cotton cover, and BEN YA PA is titled a kapok zabuton. A CHI RA and BEN YA PA describe a natural filling and a soft cover. Covers differ from mat to mat, so check each product page for the cover details.

PA THA PEE can. Its listing describes rolling it up for storage or travel, and gives its rolled size as 70 by 20 by 20 cm (28 by 8 by 8 in). None of the other zabuton listings mention rolling, so treat them as flat mats and plan a space where one can lie flat, such as under a bench or in a cupboard.

Not on this page: every zabuton here is sold as a mat alone. Zafus have their own collection, either 20 cm (8 in) high with a 35 cm (14 in) width, or 12 cm (5 in) high with a 30 cm (12 in) width. For a matched pair bought in one go, look at the meditation cushion sets, which combine one zafu with one zabuton.
