How to install a pendant light

How to install a pendant light

A pendant light is a beautiful addition to any room in your home. Its organic design can add versatility and flair. But, how do you install one?

This blog post will take you through the eleven steps of installing a pendant light. Follow these instructions carefully and enjoy your new fixture!

CHOOSE YOUR FIXTURE SHADE
You'll find the installation process for a pendant light easier if you take the time to find the right fixture first. Whether you live in an apartment or a house, most pendant light fixtures have the same basic wiring setup and are easy to install.

You might also want to take into account your room's natural light. For example, if you have a large window, hanging a smaller shade closer to the wall won't interfere with the available daylight.
Alternatively, if you live somewhere where there is less natural sunlight for instance in an apartment building, then choosing something larger may work better for you. So what is your favourite style? What colour should it be? The choices are endless, but the decision will come down to personal preference.

DOWN LIGHT PENDANTS
Down lighting pendants are more common than up lighting pendant fixtures. This type of light fixture will let you direct the lights down from the ceiling in the middle of the room but they look equally good over a table or in a corner.

These pendants can be used in any space - they work equally well in living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens. If you're looking for a way to add mood to the room.
these are the best option. They'll illuminate dark corners with their soft glow while also providing plenty of ambient light for cosy dinner parties.

If you want something dramatic to hang over kitchen or dining tables or next to sofas then one around 30 inches diameter should work well.

UP-LIGHTING PENDANTS
Up lights tend to be less popular but they add a really soft, modern lighting to the room and might be worth considering as an alternative to ceiling pendants.

They can create much more of a focus on your walls than overhead lights; ideal for putting that extra emphasis on your favorite pieces and artwork.

GET YOUR TOOLS AND MATERIALS READY
Make sure to have all the tools and materials ready before getting started. This might seem obvious but we know from experience there's nothing worse than starting a project and finding one essential item missing when you're half-way through. What you need is: a screwdriver or cordless drill, wire cutters, a ruler and needle-nosed pliers. In the box, there should be a pendant light with these parts:

- Wire nuts

- Pendant fixture

- Mounting bracket

- Shade

TURN OF THE POWER AND REMOVE THE FIXTURE
Most important of all- SAFETY. The first step is to make sure that the power has been turned off at source. This will depend on your specific property but for most, it's as simple as flipping the mains switch or removing a fuse from an electrical panel box. Proceed with caution and always use rubber-handled pliers when working with any wiring - never handle bare wires unless necessary.

Unpack the new light fixture and make sure all parts are there. If you want to change the height of the light, we recommend you use an extra pair of hands to hold the shade in the position you want so you can judge how long you want the flex before cutting.

ENSURE THE LGHT IS SUPPORTED
Make sure you have something firm on which to connect the fitting; something like a beam or piece of wood.

ATTACH THE PENDANT LIGHT BRACKET, WIRES AND SHADE
Now attach the pendant light to the ceiling. You will need the following fixtures.

Bracket: You need to attach the mount to the ceiling. To make it look nice and even, the heads of the screws should face you.
Wires: First, attach the earth wire. Then attach the power wires by colour. Twist together and then twist a wire nut in a clockwise motion to secure them.
Light and Cover: To install the pendant light, align it with the screws you placed in the mounting bracket and screw it into place.
Shade: The final step is to attach the pendant shade.
Install the Lightbulb : Now, you need to put in the light bulb. Make sure that you have one that matches the fitting e.g. bayonet or screw and the right size. Also make sure the wattage is compatible with the material of the shade.

TURN THE POWER BACK ON
Next, you should turn the power back on. Go to your circuit box and find the breaker that corresponds to the room where you installed your pendant light and flip it. Check all is working well. If not, go back and check all the previous steps.

Boho Paint Colors - A Complete Guide (2024)
Boho Paint Colors - A Complete Guide (2024)

January 17, 2026

Painting your house is not just a simple refresh with the first tin of paint you happen to pick up in the store; it’s much more than that. The colors you choose are a real reflection of your persona and taste and luckily, it’s a relatively cheap way to make a big impression. Instead of sticking to what is considered ‘safe’, why not unleash the inner you and go bold, go boho.

Boho, short for Bohemian, is the ‘in’ design trend which exudes that free-spirited, eclectic look.

It draws inspiration from different cultures, styles, and eras and often mixes natural materials, bold colors and a mix of patterns and textures. Color is critical to the boho look.

So-called ‘jewel’ colours are very popular; the inspiration coming from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and then blending old and new pieces to create a warm and cozy, warm ambience.

That said, boho means eclectic, not chaotic. Stick to the ‘rule of 3’ base colors and then choose and mix of accessories that reflect and compliment those colors. If you are thinking of giving a boho makeover to your home, then read on.
