How to choose a meditation cushion

A meditation cushion, sometimes called a meditation pillow, is usually one of two pieces. The zafu is the round cushion you sit on, and the zabuton is the flat square mat beneath it, which gives your knees and ankles a padded surface instead of a bare floor. You can buy each piece on its own or both together as a set. If you would rather lean back while you sit, a Thai triangle cushion adds a backrest. The sections below compare all four, with a link to each full range.

Zafu meditation cushions in two heights

Our single zafus come in two sizes. WA NI DA, KUN CHORN, PHOP, SA SI and PONG PA NA are 20 cm (8 in) high and 35 cm (14 in) wide. The lower WEA HAR, PONG PEE and NI SA KHON measure 12 cm (5 in) high and 30 cm (12 in) wide; these three have pleated sides, and their listings name meditation, yoga and floor sitting as uses. SA SI is listed in black, and NI SA KHON has a black and white hill tribe batik. See every zafu in our zafu meditation cushions.

Zabuton meditation mats in 48, 50 and 70 cm

Every zabuton is filled with natural kapok, lists a height of 6 cm (2 in) and comes in one of three squares: 48 cm (18 in) for BEN YA PA and A CHI RA, 50 cm (20 in) for PHA NA and WA SI NEE, and 70 cm (28 in) for the rest. PA THA PEE can be rolled up for storage or travel, to 70 by 20 by 20 cm (28 by 8 by 8 in), and its listing gives cotton for the cover. KHA CHA THARN has a black and red elephant pattern. Compare them all in our zabuton meditation mats.

Zafu and zabuton sets

To buy both pieces at once, choose a set: each one pairs a zafu with a zabuton mat that is either 50 cm or 70 cm square. KAN TA PHON and JI RA THA match a 70 cm (28 in) mat with a zafu 20 cm (8 in) high, while JI RA YA and CHA NA PON pair a 50 cm mat with a 12 cm high zafu. Every set is filled with natural kapok, and KAN TA PHON and JI RA THA are covered in cotton. See every pairing in our zafu and zabuton sets.

Thai triangle cushions with a backrest

A Thai triangle cushion gives you floor seating with a backrest, for reading, relaxing or meditation. Some are a single triangle: WA RA NA, for example, is suggested as a backrest for meditation, reading or lounging. Others join an integrated triangle backrest to a one, two or three fold mattress, and the three fold CHON NA KAN lists uses from floor chair to meditation seat. The triangle styles all list kapok filling and cotton covers. Find every style in our Thai triangle floor cushions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A zafu is the round cushion you sit on, and a zabuton is the low square mat placed under it. Our single zafus are 20 cm (8 in) or 12 cm (5 in) high, and our zabutons are 48, 50 or 70 cm square, each listed at 6 cm (2 in) high. The CHA NON set listing describes the zabuton as a padded surface beneath your knees and ankles.

Start with seat height. Pick a 20 cm (8 in) zafu to sit higher, or a 12 cm (5 in) zafu to sit closer to the floor, and remember that a zabuton underneath adds its own height, listed at 6 cm (2 in). The mats come in 48, 50 or 70 cm squares, so a larger mat leaves more floor around the cushion. Every product page lists its measurements, so compare them with your space before you order.

Our zabutons and our zafu and zabuton sets are filled with natural kapok, a natural fibre, and so are most of our single zafus. The PA THA PEE zabuton has a cotton cover, and the Thai triangle cushions list kapok with cotton covers. Materials vary between designs, so read each product page for the complete materials.

Yes. Each zafu and zabuton set combines one zafu and one mat; JI RA YA, for example, includes one round zafu cushion and one matching meditation mat. You can also buy the pieces separately and mix sizes, such as a 12 cm (5 in) zafu on a 70 cm (28 in) zabuton. Single zafus and single zabutons are each sold on their own, without the other piece.
