Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts: Handmade Ideas in Natural Materials

12 handmade Christmas gifts in natural materials, sorted by who they suit, with the material and size of each, plus what eco friendly can and can't mean.

Eco Friendly Christmas Gifts: Handmade Ideas in Natural Materials

An eco friendly label on a gift doesn't tell you much by itself. What you can check is what a gift is made of, how it was made and how big it is, so this list sets those out for every item.

Here are 12 Christmas gifts sorted by who they suit: tea lovers, hosts, people who meditate or do yoga, and anyone filling a stocking. Ten are woven or made from bamboo, water hyacinth, rattan, sedge, pandanus, seagrass or wood, or filled with kapok; two are small fabric charms. Every gift is from our own shop. Three listings (both coaster sets and the pandanus basket) say they are woven by artisans in Thailand; for the others we use the listing's own words.

We picked pieces from our range whose listings describe them as made by hand from natural materials, all in stock when we checked in October 2026. Three listings leave a gap, flagged where each gift appears: the zabuton's doesn't say how it is made, and neither charm's names its fabric. There are no prices here, because prices change.

For tea lovers

Both strainers are made for loose-leaf tea, so for a tea-bag drinker go straight to the coasters.

The NI RIN DA bamboo tea strainer is handwoven from natural bamboo, and the listing says each one is made individually. It is the longer of the two, at 26 cm long and 3 cm high, and its listing gives no care instructions.

The TUNTA bamboo tea strainer is the compact one, handcrafted from bamboo with a woven body that lets water through and holds loose leaves back. At 3 cm high and 3 cm across it will slip into a stocking, and its care is simple: rinse under running water and let it air dry.

The KA NOK PUN water hyacinth coasters are a set of four, handwoven by artisans in Thailand from water hyacinth and finished with a jute edge. The WAN NA rattan coasters are four round coasters, also woven by Thai artisans, in natural rattan with a patterned weave. So choose on looks: a jute border or an all-rattan pattern.

Both sets are 10 cm across and 0.5 cm high, which is cup, mug and glass size; a large teapot may overhang. Wipe either with a damp cloth and let it air dry; the WAN NA listing adds to store them somewhere dry.

WAN NA rattan coasters, a set of four, each 10 cm across.

For the host and the table

The LAVINLIA sedge placemat is handwoven from sedge in blue and natural tones and measures 45 x 30 cm. Its listing suggests it as a housewarming gift. The trade-off is care: wipe or spot clean only, dry fully before storing, and no soaking or machine washing. It suits a host happy to wipe down after dinner better than one who machine-washes all the table linen.

The SA LIN THIP wooden salad fork and spoon is one fork and one spoon, handmade by artisans from natural wood, 20 cm long and 5 cm wide. The listing calls them gentle on wooden, ceramic and glass bowls, which matters if the host has a serving bowl they're fond of. It doesn't name the wood or give care instructions.

The Nattalee pandanus basket is an oval basket handwoven by Thai artisans from 100% natural pandanus (krajood) and described as handmade in Thailand. It measures 33 x 20 x 10 cm. At 10 cm high it is shallow, better for hand towels and toiletries in a guest bathroom, or small things on a shelf, than for bulky storage.

For meditation and yoga

Both cushions are filled with organic kapok, a light, fluffy plant fibre, and neither listing names the cover fabric. They are sold for seated meditation, so for a yoga fan they make most sense if that person also meditates sitting on the floor.

The KUN CHORN zafu is the raised cushion you sit on, 20 cm high and 35 cm wide, and its listing describes it as handcrafted. The PHONG PHIR zabuton is the flat mat that goes underneath, 70 x 70 cm and 6 cm high; its listing doesn't say how it is made. If you're unsure whether someone needs one or both, our guide to what a zafu is and how it pairs with a zabuton explains when the mat earns its place, mainly on hard floors and in longer sessions.

These are the bulkiest gifts here, and a 70 cm square mat is awkward to wrap and to post, so plan around the size if you're sending it.

Stocking fillers

Three small things for the toe of a stocking (or stocking stuffers, if you're shopping in the US).

The NARA seagrass coin wallet is handwoven from natural seagrass and measures 15 x 6.5 cm, with room for coins, cards, folded notes or keys. It is the practical one of the three, though the listing doesn't say how it closes, so check the photos if escaping change would bother the recipient.

The LALAO buffalo bag charm is a handmade fabric buffalo with embroidered details and a tassel, 10 x 7.5 x 5 cm, in white or blue. It hangs from a bag or works as a keyring.

The KADARA tassel charm is a handmade beige fabric elephant finished with a cotton tassel and wooden beads. At 30 cm long overall (the ornament itself is 23 cm without its hanging cord) it is a big charm, better hung from a basket handle, a door or a large tote than from a small bag.

Both charms are mainly decorative, and neither listing names its fabric. If a natural fibre is the whole point of the gift, the seagrass wallet is the surer choice.

What makes a gift eco friendly?

The phrase has no single agreed meaning, so for any gift, ours included, these questions are more use than the label:

  • What is it made of? A listing that names the material, such as handwoven seagrass or natural rattan, gives you something to check. One that only says eco does not.
  • How was it made? Handwoven, handmade and machine-made are different things, even in the same material.
  • Will it be used? A well-made gift is wasted in a drawer, so match it to how the person actually lives.
  • Can it be looked after? Natural fibres need gentle care, so clear care instructions matter.

That is why the gifts above are described by material, making and size, and none is called eco friendly. How kind a gift is to the planet also depends on things no product page can show, such as how long it is kept.

Wrapping it naturally

Brown paper and string suit gifts that are already woven plant fibre. For the coasters or the coin wallet, a tea towel or square of fabric can be the wrapping and a second small gift at once. For the 70 cm zabuton, a large piece of fabric knotted at the corners is easier than paper.

Caring for natural gifts

Care notes for the coasters and placemat are above. The basket's listing has none. For the basket, and as a general routine for the other woven pieces, our guide on how to clean wicker and rattan baskets sets out the steps: dust first, wipe with a barely damp cloth, don't soak, and dry fully.

FAQ

What are good natural Christmas gifts?

Everyday things made by hand from a material you can name, matched to how the person lives, such as a bamboo tea strainer for a loose-leaf drinker or wooden salad servers for a host.

What are natural stocking fillers?

Small pieces in a named plant fibre. From this list, the NARA seagrass coin wallet, the TUNTA bamboo strainer and either set of 10 cm coasters will fit a stocking, and so will the two charms, though their fabric isn't named.

What's a good gift for someone who meditates?

A zafu, the raised cushion for sitting on the floor, with a zabuton underneath if they sit on a hard floor or for long sessions. Both cushions above are filled with organic kapok.

How can I tell if a gift is as green as it claims?

Read the listing rather than the label. If it leans on words like green without naming a material or saying how the item was made, that is a gap, not a promise.

If none of these is quite right, our full Christmas gift collection is grouped the same way and adds woven bags.
