How to Fit a Rattan Lampshade (Step-by-Step Guide)

A rattan lampshade changes a room the moment it goes up. The weave softens the light. Fitting one is mostly a matter of planning: knowing what is in the box, choosing how the shade will be powered, and setting the right height before anything goes near the ceiling. This guide walks through each step for our rattan pendant lights.
What comes with your shade
Before you plan the fitting, check what you have. Our rattan pendant shades are sold as the shade with its hanging hardware. The cord set and the bulb are sold separately; bulbs are never supplied with any of our lights. That means you need three things to finish the job:
- The shade, with the hanging hardware that comes with it.
- A way to power it: an existing ceiling pendant set, a new cord set, or a plug-in kit.
- A bulb of your choice.
You will find cord sets, plug-in kits and lampshade brackets in our lighting kits and cord sets collection. Each product page lists exactly what is included, so read it before you order the parts.

Choose how the shade will be powered
There are three common routes. Pick the one that matches your room.
Route 1: an existing ceiling pendant
If your room already has a ceiling rose with a flex and lampholder hanging from it, the shade may simply need to sit on that lampholder. Measure the opening at the top of the shade and compare it with the lampholder or shade ring you have. If they do not match, a lampshade bracket from the lighting kits collection can bridge the gap.

Route 2: a new cord set at the ceiling
If you want a fabric cord or a different drop length, the existing pendant can be replaced with a new cord set. Anything that involves the ceiling rose or the wiring behind it is not a DIY job: have it installed by a qualified electrician. Have the shade, the cord set and your chosen drop height ready so the electrician can fit everything in one visit.
Route 3: a plug-in kit
No ceiling point where you want the light? Plug-in pendant lights hang from a wall socket. See our plug-in pendant lights collection. The plug-in kit and the bulb are sold separately.

Step by step: hanging the shade
Once you know your route, the fitting itself follows the same pattern.
1. Unpack and check
Unpack the shade and the hanging hardware and keep them together. Each shade is handwoven, so size, colour and weave vary a little from one piece to the next. That is part of the character, not a fault.
2. Decide the drop
Work out where the bottom of the shade should sit before you shorten or fix any cord. Our rattan pendant lights guide covers how high to hang a shade over a table or an island.
3. Attach the shade to the holder
Fit the shade to the lampholder, shade ring or bracket using the hanging hardware supplied. Make sure it sits level. If the shade tilts, check that the holder is centred in the top opening and that the cord hangs straight.

4. Fit the bulb
Choose a bulb that suits the lampholder on your cord set or pendant. Bulbs are never included with our lights.
5. Step back and adjust
Switch on and look at the shade from where you will usually sit or stand. Adjust the drop if the light catches your eye or the shade blocks the view across the table.
Common fitting problems
The shade will not sit straight. Check the holder is centred and tightened. Even a small offset at the top shows at the bottom.
The top opening does not fit my lampholder. Measure both and look at the lampshade brackets in the lighting kits collection. If you are unsure which part you need, email us at thaihomeshopmail@gmail.com with a photo of your fitting and the shade you ordered.
I rent and cannot change the wiring. A plug-in kit is the usual answer. Plug-in pendant lights hang from a wall socket.

FAQ
Do I need to buy a bulb separately?
Yes. Bulbs are never supplied with any of our lights. Our rattan pendant shades include their hanging hardware, and the cord set and bulb are sold separately.
Can I fit a rattan lampshade to my existing ceiling light?
Often, yes, if your ceiling pendant has a lampholder and the shade's top opening fits it. If it does not fit, a lampshade bracket can help. Anything involving the wiring should be installed by a qualified electrician.
Do I need an electrician?
Yes, for any hard-wired or ceiling installation: have it installed by a qualified electrician. Fitting a shade onto an existing lampholder or using a plug-in kit does not involve the ceiling wiring.
