Thanksgiving Table Decor: 10 Harvest Ideas with Natural Woven Textures

A Thanksgiving table has to carry the meal, and decor that fills the middle ends up fighting the platters for room. Woven pieces that lie flat dress the table without taking that room. Set a round water hyacinth or banana leaf sheath mat at each place, a rattan coaster under each glass, and one wide, shallow bamboo basket of gourds in the middle (several small ones on a long table). Bread and nibbles go in bamboo on the buffet or sideboard, and rust, mustard and olive napkins bring the colour.

Here are 10 Thanksgiving table setting ideas grouped by where they go (each seat, the middle, the buffet), then a count for a table of 8 or 12.

Fibre tones first, harvest colour on top

The mat and coaster listings describe warm earthy or warm natural tones, so water hyacinth, banana leaf sheath and rattan sit together even when the weaves differ. Stronger colour comes from what sits on top: rust, mustard, olive or deep red napkins, cream or white plates, and the gourds and fruit in the centre basket.

At each seat, the plate sits centred on the round mat, with the napkin on top and a coaster under the glass. The middle stays low and flat, because that's where the turkey, the sides and the gravy will land. Compare shapes in our woven placemats.

Thanksgiving table setting ideas for each place

1. Round water hyacinth mats with harvest napkins

The THI PA NAN placemat is round, handwoven from water hyacinth and 30 cm (12 in) across, and its listing describes warm earthy tones. Lay a rust or mustard linen napkin across the middle of each cream or white plate, one colour for every seat, so the colour repeats down the table. These are Thanksgiving placemats with nothing turkey-shaped about them, so they go back on the table in December. Other designs are in our water hyacinth placemats.

2. Four mat designs, one table

Setting 12 places doesn't mean buying 12 of one design. THI PA NAN, KO RA WAT, KA RAN and JI RA PREE YA are four round water hyacinth designs, and every one measures 30 cm (12 in). With size and fibre shared, a mixed set reads as intentional. Alternate them, or give each long side its own design.

All are handmade in Thailand, and the listings say slight variations in colour, size and weave come with every mat, so no two seats match exactly anyway. Compare all four in our round woven placemats.

3. Banana leaf sheath as a second fibre

The MON CHI TA placemat is round and 30 cm (12 in) across, like the water hyacinth mats, but handwoven from banana leaf sheath, in what its listing calls warm natural tones. Same outline, different fibre: a second texture without breaking the row of circles. Alternate it with water hyacinth, or keep it for the head and foot of the table so those places stand apart.

4. Compact mats for the kids' table or a tight squeeze

YA NI SA is another round water hyacinth mat in warm earthy tones, but at 25 cm (10 in) it is 5 cm (2 in) smaller than the others; its listing calls the design compact. Use it for the whole kids' table, or only where seats come out tight in the check below, such as an extra chair squeezed in at a corner.

5. Rattan coasters at every glass

The FUNDEE coasters are round, 10 cm (4 in) across and handwoven from rattan in warm earthy tones, sold as a set of 4. They carry the weave from the mats up to the glasses. Allow one coaster per glass: with one glass each, 8 guests need 2 sets and 12 guests need 3. If every place gets water and wine, double it. More styles are in our coasters collection.

6. A flat harvest display in a wide bamboo basket

The BUABAN basket is a wide, shallow handwoven bamboo basket, 35 cm (14 in) wide, and its listing suggests it for fruit and bread displays and table centrepieces. Fill it loosely with ornamental gourds, a few mini pumpkins and some wheat stems laid flat, then tuck in apples or pears for colour.

The shallow base holds everything at gourd height, so conversation carries straight across the table. When the turkey arrives, the whole arrangement moves to the sideboard in one go; the listing calls the basket easy to move.

7. Small rounds repeated down a long table

One centrepiece gets lost on a table for 12. Two or three Isaline baskets spaced along the centre line cover the length instead. Each is a round, shallow bamboo basket, 22 cm (9 in) across in warm natural tones, and its listing names decorative centrepieces among its uses.

Give each the same small cluster, say three gourds, a few acorns and a couple of leaves, so they read as one display split into parts. The gaps between them are where the serving dishes go.

8. A leaf trail on bare wood

Skip the runner. Lay autumn (fall) leaves, acorns, wheat stems and mini gourds in a loose line straight down the bare wood, and set the 30 cm (12 in) water hyacinth or banana leaf sheath mats directly on the table on either side. Keep the trail narrow so it marks the centre line without taking it over. Our guide to placemats for a wood table covers how woven mats suit the surface.

Thanksgiving buffet table ideas

Every basket of bread moved off the dining table frees room for a platter, and a buffet has no sightlines to protect, so taller and deeper baskets belong here.

9. Bread in bamboo

The WANTANA is sold as a bread basket, woven from bamboo in a neutral palette. It comes in two sizes: Small, 22 cm (9 in) across and 8 cm (3.5 in) high, or Large, 27 cm (11 in) across and 11 cm (4.5 in) high. The deeper sides suit a pile of rolls on the buffet.

If some bread stays on a long dining table, one basket means rolls travelling the whole length. Put an Isaline or a BUABAN at each end instead; both listings suggest fruit and bread displays. More shapes are in our bread baskets collection.

10. Nibbles and the dessert end

The VI MON set is five tall, narrow bamboo baskets, each 21 cm (8.5 in) tall and 7 cm (3 in) wide. The listing suggests them for nuts and dried fruit, breadsticks and crackers, and names family gatherings among the occasions. Stand all five in a row along the front of the buffet, one kind of nibble in each.

At the dessert end, the MON CHI DA tray is handwoven, 27 cm (11 in) wide and 6 cm (2.5 in) high, and its listing suggests it for serving bread, pastries or snacks and for presenting fresh fruit. Find more in our trays and baskets collection.

Planning a long family table

Before buying, check how much table each guest gets: divide the table's length by the number of chairs on one long side, then compare the result with the mat.

As an example, take a table 244 cm (96 in) long with 5 chairs down each side and one at each end, which seats 12. 244 divided by 5 is about 49 cm (19 in) per seat. A 30 cm (12 in) mat uses 30 cm of that, leaving about 19 cm (7 in) between neighbouring mats. If your own figure comes out close to 30 cm (12 in), use YA NI SA at 25 cm (10 in) for those seats, or for the whole row.

A runner is optional. The KAN TI CHA runner is 127 x 43 cm (50 x 17 in), and its listing names family gatherings among its uses. Two laid end to end cover 254 cm (100 in), just over the length of the example table; see it in our table runners. Or leave it out and use the leaf trail from idea 8. Either way, two or three low pieces down the middle leave platters more room than one tall arrangement.

Chairs first, then the tape measure

Count every chair, kids' table included, measure the table and run the per-seat check. Settle the seat mats first; the middle and the buffet work with whatever room they leave. When it's time to plan the next holiday table, our Christmas table decor ideas take woven pieces in a different direction.

Thanksgiving table questions

What is a traditional Thanksgiving centrepiece?

Harvest produce is the traditional choice: gourds, mini pumpkins, wheat, apples and pears, sometimes arranged to overflow from a cornucopia, the horn of plenty. A wide, shallow basket such as BUABAN gives that overflowing look while staying low. Keep anything edible inside the basket and let the gourds, wheat and leaves trail out across the table.

How low should a Thanksgiving centrepiece be?

Below eye level for someone sitting down, so nobody has to lean sideways to talk to the person opposite. Rather than chasing a number, sit in one of the chairs and look across. Flat bases help: a shallow basket adds almost no height, and several small displays stay lower than one large one.

What theme suits a natural Thanksgiving table?

A harvest theme, with woven texture as the base and warm colour on top. Round water hyacinth or banana leaf sheath mats and rattan coasters set the seats, rust, mustard, olive or deep red napkins add colour, and gourds, wheat and leaves fill the middle.

How do you store woven placemats after Thanksgiving?

The round mat listings give two care lines: wipe clean with a damp cloth and allow to air dry, and store flat to maintain its shape. After the meal, wipe each mat, let it air dry, then store the mats flat until next November.
