This page brings together our rattan pendant lights, handwoven in Thailand. Most designs are natural rattan alone, such as JANTA, TAWAN, MON TA KAN and the star shaped PALAVEE. Others, including CHA LA, NUB DAO and CHU JAI, weave rattan together with bamboo, and several woven bamboo shades sit alongside them. You will see the same shade called a rattan pendant light, a wicker lampshade or a rattan light shade, and all three are right: as our guide to rattan vs wicker explains, rattan is the material and wicker is the way it is woven.
Sizes vary a lot from one design to the next, so start with the space you want to light. Compact shades such as LA PA, 20 cm (8 in) across, and CHA YA NAN, 22 cm (9 in) across, suit a bedside or a row over a kitchen island. TAWAN and JANTA each come in two sizes, from 26 cm (10 in) up to 33 and 35 cm (13 and 14 in). Low, wide shapes include KAN WIN at 38 cm (15 in) across and the moon shaped KAN at 40 cm (16 in).
For one large shade over a dining table, PARADEE measures 58 to 61 cm (23 to 24 in) across and CHA NI TA Large 52 cm (21 in). Taller silhouettes such as RALARIN, 48 cm (19 in) high, and VILIA, 40 cm (16 in) high, give a longer outline when they hang. For a darker look, BLACK CHA YA NAN has a matte black finish. Every shade is made by hand, so sizes can vary slightly; check the measurements on each product page.
Each pendant shade comes with its hanging hardware, while the cord set and bulb are sold separately. To hang one as a ceiling light, pair it with a ceiling cord set from our lighting accessories. Our ceiling cord sets have a canopy and an E26 / E27 socket, most with a fabric cord, and the black set's listing recommends professional installation if you are unfamiliar with electrical wiring. Most shades list an E27 socket, so check your fitting before you order. With no ceiling point, see our plug in pendant lights, which hang from a plug-in cord set instead. Our guides to choosing a pendant lampshade size and how to fit a rattan lampshade cover sizing and hanging in more detail.
Product pages suggest dining tables, kitchen islands, bedrooms, living rooms and entryways. Several shades, including CHA YA NAN, MON TA KAN, JANTA, DA MI SA and NUB DAO, are also listed for covered outdoor spaces such as a roofed porch or pergola, while others, such as KAN WIN and PARADEE, are listed for indoor use, so check each page. Listings advise keeping rattan out of prolonged direct sun, heavy rain and excess humidity. Dust the weave with a soft dry cloth or feather duster. Shades for a roofed porch or pergola are also gathered in our outdoor rattan pendant lights.
Rattan is the natural material and wicker is the weaving method, so a wicker lampshade can be woven from rattan, bamboo or other fibers. Most shades on this page are woven from natural rattan alone, such as JANTA, TAWAN and KAN WIN. Some, such as CHA LA, NUB DAO and CHU JAI, combine rattan with bamboo, and a few are woven bamboo. Each product title and page names the material.
No. Each pendant shade comes with its hanging hardware, and the cord set and bulb are sold separately. You can hang a shade from a ceiling cord set, or from a plug-in cord set if there is no ceiling point; both are in our lighting accessories. Most shades list an E27 socket. Product pages recommend a warm white LED bulb or a vintage Edison style LED bulb.
It depends on the design. Compact shades such as LA PA and CHA YA NAN are 20 to 22 cm (8 to 9 in) across. TAWAN and JANTA come in two sizes, 26 cm (10 in) and 33 or 35 cm (13 or 14 in). The widest is PARADEE at 58 to 61 cm (23 to 24 in), and CHA NI TA Large is 52 cm (21 in). Each shade is handmade, so check the measurements on the product page.
Only under cover, and only where the product page says so. Shades such as CHA YA NAN, MON TA KAN, JANTA, DA MI SA and NUB DAO are listed for covered outdoor spaces such as a roofed porch or pergola. Others, including KAN WIN and PARADEE, are listed for indoor use. Listings advise avoiding prolonged direct sun, heavy rain and excess humidity, so keep the shade where rain cannot reach it.
