Boho Kitchen Decor Ideas: Woven, Handmade and Renter Friendly

Nine boho kitchen decor ideas from ceiling to wall, using handmade woven pieces, with the listed size of each and a plain note on what it is not for.

Boho Kitchen Decor Ideas: Woven, Handmade and Renter Friendly

A new build or rented kitchen can feel like a showroom: smooth doors, a bright ceiling light and nothing for the eye to rest on. Boho kitchen decor fixes that with texture and warmth, not new cabinets. Change the light, give the worktop a woven basket, put something natural on the table, and the room starts to look lived in.

The nine ideas below run from ceiling to wall: light, storage, table, then walls. Each uses pieces from our own range (everything we sell is handmade in Thailand), with sizes from the listings and a plain note on what each piece is not for. Short on time? Start with the light if you can change the fitting, then add one piece you use daily, such as placemats or a bread basket.

What makes a kitchen feel boho

There is no single rulebook. A kitchen reads as boho when a few of these sit together:

  • Natural textures, such as woven bamboo, rattan, seagrass and raw wood.
  • Greenery, even a single trailing plant on a shelf.
  • Warm colour in terracotta, ochre and sandy neutrals.
  • A little pattern from a striped mat, a rug or a tea towel.

You do not need all four. A white kitchen with woven pieces and a plant already leans boho; a colourful one may only need texture. Our boho colour palette guide goes deeper on colour, and boho paint colours covers the walls.

9 boho kitchen decor ideas, from ceiling to wall

1. Swap the ceiling light for a woven pendant

A ceiling light is seen from almost every corner, so a woven shade changes the whole kitchen at once.

The ANANDA bamboo pendant shade comes in sizes from S (18 cm wide) to XL (40 cm wide). The JUNDARA round bamboo pendant is handwoven and runs from XS (18 cm tall) to XL (35 cm tall) in natural, brown or black. Browse our kitchen pendant lights collection for others.

Both are shades with hanging hardware. Neither includes a bulb or a cord set (the JUNDARA listing states that its cord set is not included). Both suit indoor use, and only one of them is also listed for covered outdoor spots. Hang them over a table or island, not above the hob: we make no claim about heat or steam. Renters should ask before changing a fitting, and any new wiring is a job for a qualified electrician.

2. Group pendants over a table or island

One shade over a long table or island can look lost; two or three in a row, or a loose cluster, makes the light the feature. The ANANDA listing is written for single or clustered hanging, and the JUNDARA listing suggests grouping shades above a dining table. Mixing JUNDARA colours, or two ANANDA widths, stops a cluster looking like a lighting aisle.

The catch is the count. Each shade comes with hanging hardware but no bulb or cord set, so three shades means three bulbs and three cord sets. Both suit indoor use, and only one of them is also listed for covered outdoor spots. A cluster suits a kitchen diner or island; in a small kitchen, one shade is usually enough.

3. Baskets for bread and produce on the worktop

A worktop basket puts woven texture where you see it every day. The PASUB seagrass basket is long and low, 32 x 20 cm and 8 cm high, with handles, so it sits along the back of the worktop or moves to the table. The WANTANA bamboo bread basket is round and comes in two sizes: Small is 22 cm (9 in) across and 8 cm (3.5 in) high, and Large is 27 cm (11 in) across and 11 cm (4.5 in) high. Its listing suggests fresh produce, accessories or simply display.

We make no food-safety claim for these or any woven piece in this guide, so keep bread in its bag or line the basket with a cloth napkin. For more, see our bread baskets collection.

4. Open storage that looks good

Open shelves read as boho when they look deliberate. Swap mismatched tubs for two or three baskets in related weaves and the clutter starts to look like texture.

  • KUNNI storage basket: handwoven by Thai artisans from natural seagrass, with woven handles. Small is 17 cm (7 in) high and wide; Large is 20 cm (8 in). The listing names laundry, blankets and household essentials; in a kitchen, think tea towels and spare napkins. Being handmade, each varies slightly in size and shape.
  • KODCHAON bamboo basket: the tall one, 26 cm (10 in) high and 20 cm (8 in) wide, in one size. Its listing suggests fresh produce, trinkets or a centrepiece.
  • SANGTONG bamboo basket: round and low, 25 cm (10 in) across and 10 cm (4 in) high, so it sits easily on a shelf. Its listing suggests fruit and vegetables in the kitchen, or general organising.

Our bamboo baskets collection has more options, and our small kitchen storage ideas post covers tight spaces.

5. A tray to gather the small things

Small things drift along a shelf or windowsill when nothing holds them. A tray draws a line around them.

The WAN NEE rattan tray is handwoven and comes in Small (17 x 11 cm), Large (24 x 16 cm) or as a set of two. Its listing is written for jewellery and coins on dressing tables, coffee tables and shelves, so in a kitchen it suits a shelf or sill holding coins and other small, dry odds and ends. It is a styling piece with no heat, spill or food claim, so keep it away from the hob and sink.

6. Woven placemats on the kitchen table

Placemats bring weave to the table without commitment: they go in a drawer when you want it clear.

Round mats suit a small or round table; the rectangle covers more of a long one. The LAVIN and DOL LA VA listings give the care as wipe clean. This guide makes no heat claim for any of the three, so keep a trivet for hot pans. See the full range of woven placemats.

7. Coasters for texture at the table

The KA NOK PUN water hyacinth coasters come as a set of four, each 10 cm across with a jute edge. Beside woven placemats they repeat the texture at a smaller scale, so the table looks put together. This guide makes no heat or moisture claim for them, so treat them as texture first.

8. Plants and greenery in woven pieces

A plant or two softens hard surfaces, trailing from a top shelf or sitting on the windowsill. A woven basket hides a plain plastic pot.

The KUNNI basket from idea 4 lists plant covers among its uses; pick the 17 cm or 20 cm size to fit a small pot. We do not sell plants and make no water claim for any basket, so keep each plant in its own pot on a saucer inside the basket, and lift it out to water.

9. A woven wall display

A blank wall above the table takes woven texture without adding to the worktop.

The WARRADA rattan wall decor set is five decorative baskets in four sizes, handwoven in Thailand from natural rattan in golden tones: one about 30 cm (12 in) across, one 25 cm (10 in), one 17 cm (7 in) and two 10 cm (4 in). The listing calls them lightweight, suggests a loose cluster with space between pieces, and names the kitchen among the rooms they suit. It does not mention fixings, so plan your own hooks, or stand the larger baskets on a console or table, which it also suggests.

Keep it calm, not cluttered

Boho tolerates a lot, but a kitchen still has to work:

  • Stick to two or three materials, such as bamboo, rattan and seagrass, rather than every weave you own.
  • Keep one stretch of worktop completely clear. Woven pieces look intentional when they have space around them.
  • Give every basket a job. One that holds tea towels earns its place; empty baskets on every surface start to look like a shop display.
  • When something new comes in, put something else away.

Frequently asked questions

What colours suit a boho kitchen?

Warm, earthy colours work well: terracotta, ochre, olive or sage, and sandy neutrals against a white or cream base. Woven bamboo, rattan and seagrass bring their own warm tones, so even a kitchen with plain walls feels warmer once a few natural pieces are in. Add pattern in small doses, such as a striped mat or tea towel.

Can renters make a kitchen boho?

Yes. Much of the look comes from pieces you can take with you, such as baskets, placemats, coasters and plants. A woven pendant shade changes the whole room but means replacing a fitting, so ask your landlord first. Our shades come with hanging hardware; the bulb and cord set are not included, and they are for indoor use, with one design also listed for covered outdoor areas.

What lighting suits a boho kitchen?

Woven bamboo or rattan pendant shades, hung singly or grouped over a table or island. Ours are shades with hanging hardware; the bulb and cord set are not included, and they are for indoor use, with one design also listed for covered outdoor areas. We make no claim for use above a hob.

What is modern or simple boho kitchen decor?

Modern or simple boho is the pared-back version: pale cabinets and clear worktops, with a handful of woven pieces doing the work. Think a bread basket, a set of placemats and one plant rather than layers of colour, pattern and collected objects. It suits small kitchens and anyone who wants warmth without busyness.
