Black Bamboo Pendant Lights, Handwoven in Thailand

Black bamboo pendant lights bring contrast and definition to a room in a way natural shades can't. Each piece in this collection is handwoven by Thai artisans, mostly from bamboo strips, and finished in a deep black that keeps the weave texture visible while sharpening the silhouette against a pale ceiling or wall. The result is a warm golden glow downward through the open weave, with crisp shadow patterns thrown around it. Pieces like the TEERAYA Black, JUNDARA and BLACK VAREE show the range, from flexible shape-it-yourself shades to bold rounded forms.

Our black bamboo pendant lights are sold as shades only, to hang from a plug-in pendant kit or a hardwired ceiling cord set (both sold separately), in sizes from compact shades about 20 cm tall for bedsides up to statement pieces over 50 cm tall for dining tables and islands. The black finish suits modern, minimalist, Japandi and industrial-leaning rooms where a natural shade would blend in too quietly. Against glass or moulded fixtures the handwoven texture reads as styled and deliberate rather than builder-grade — the reason designers reach for woven shades in the first place.

The Story Behind the Craft

Some of these shapes are based on the bamboo fish traps once used in the rice paddies of rural Thailand. Many black designs are the same handwoven shades as our natural range, such as TEERAYA, JUNDARA and VAREE, finished in matte black so the open weave still casts patterns of light and shadow.

Black Bamboo Pendants Over a Dining Table or Island

Picture a dark woven shade hanging over your dining table, the warm light pooling on the table below while the black form reads sharp against the ceiling. Black pendants anchor a room more firmly than natural ones — they hold their own in modern kitchens, over islands, and in rooms with bold or monochrome palettes. Larger sizes (40 cm and up) work as the single anchor over a table.

Small Black Bamboo Pendants for Definition

In a reading corner, hallway or beside a bed, a small black pendant adds a point of contrast without taking over. The dark shade frames the light tightly and suits minimalist and industrial corners where you want one crisp, deliberate detail rather than a soft natural glow.

Why Thai Home Shop — not Amazon or IKEA

  • Every light is handwoven by a named Thai artisan — not factory-produced.
  • Sustainable bamboo sourced from the same villages we've worked with for over two decades.
  • Each piece is unique — the slight variations in weave are the mark of a real artisan, not a defect.
  • You can't buy this story at a big-box store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each shade is handwoven from natural bamboo, or rattan for BLACK CHA YA NAN, and finished in black. We can't promise the colour will never change, so follow the care notes on the product pages: avoid prolonged direct sunlight, rain and high humidity, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth or feather duster, and wipe gently with a slightly damp cloth when needed.

Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the shade 70–85 cm (28–34 in) above the tabletop on a standard 8-ft ceiling; over a kitchen island or counter, 60–75 cm (24–30 in) above the surface. Above a bedside table, 45–60 cm works well. Space multiple pendants 60–75 cm apart and use odd numbers in a cluster — they look more balanced. Shades come with their hanging hardware, but without a cord or bulb; for hardwired fittings, use a qualified electrician.

Either, because each black bamboo pendant light is sold as a shade only, without a cord, ceiling fitting or bulb. For a plug-in light, pair it with a plug-in pendant kit, handy for renters and rooms without a ceiling rose. For a permanent fit, use a ceiling cord set installed by a qualified electrician. We sell both separately. Check each product page for socket and bulb details, or contact us if you need help choosing.

Bamboo pendants give a warm, naturally diffused light — the open weave casts a soft golden glow and gentle shadow rather than a bright, even flood. Fit a warm-white LED (around 2700K) with enough output for the room: roughly 800 lumens for a small space, 1100 or more for a dining or living area. Because the weave softens the light, pick a slightly higher-output bulb than you would behind a solid shade, and a dimmable one so you can go from bright at dinner to a low glow afterwards. In a kitchen or workspace, treat the pendant as ambient light and add task lighting over worktops.

Not a problem. Every order comes with a 30-day return window — if the light doesn't work in your space, contact us to arrange a return. Return postage is paid by the customer, and the original shipping cost is deducted from the refund.
